Grants to USA and Canada collaborations between local government agency directors, community groups, and place-based funders for environmental stewardship and social justice projects. Funding may be used for personnel costs and for project-related expenses. Applicants may submit Sustainable Climate Action and /or Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) applications.

This sustainable climate action and/or GSI funding opportunity is seeking applications that:

  1. Explore the creation and advancement of collaborative partnerships that include a local government sustainability and/or water department(s), frontline community-led group(s), and place-based funder(s).
  2. Commit to addressing institutional and systemic racism and equitable outcomes.
  3. Include frontline community-led groups as co-creators, leaders, and partners in the development of this funding opportunity.

This opportunity supports collaborative teams that are undertaking the following work:

  1. Advancing an equitable sustainable climate action project that advances frontline community needs and priorities.
  2. Developing a new collaborative partnership or deepening an existing one.
  3. Applying a racial equity approach to both the collaboration and the project. 

Funds can be used for:

  • Personnel costs related to the project such as new local government staff, new or existing staff at the partner nonprofit organization, or consultant fees
  • Other project costs like community stipends, supplies, administrative costs, or small capital/equipment costs directly related to project work

The Round 18 grant pool will likely support 4 - 7 projects.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Applicants can apply for one of the following:
- One-year grants for $25,000 - $75,000.
- Two-year grants for $75,000 - $150,00

Term of Contract:

Partners for Places grants have a life span of anywhere from 1 to 2 years.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible, applications must comply with all of the following:
1. Projects must be undertaken through a collaborative partnership between a local government sustainability or water director (s), frontline community-led group(s), and place-based funder(s) . Any of these partners may submit an application on behalf of the project team :
- One or more local government sustainability or water director(s) : a) A sustainability director leads a multi-department and community-wide urban sustainability initiative from within a city or a county government in the United States or Canada. b) A water department or water utility director may include decision-makers from local government water departments or local water utilities. They must be based in a city or county in the United States or Canada.
- One or more local frontline community-led group(s): Frontline community-led groups are made up of and/or serve people who are impacted by systems of oppression and injustice, economic disadvantage, and environmental harm. A frontline community-led group can be a nonprofit organization or group of nonprofit organizations.
- One or more place-based funder(s): A local or regional, place-based funder is an entity who regularly makes grants within a community from annual philanthropic resources such as a community foundation or a private/corporate foundation that focuses on a greater metropolitan area or larger regional area.
2. There is an eligible grant Recipient. The partners must identify a 501c3 non - profit to serve as the grant recipient, accepting and managing grant funds on behalf of the partners post-award. This could be a local community foundation, a non - profit organization, or a non - profit created by local government for the purpose of accepting grant funds. In most cases one of the partners can serve in this role.

Proposing teams that currently have an open Partners for Places award are not eligible to apply for this call for application.

Partners for Places will not support salaries for existing local government staff, major capital projects, or endowments.

To be eligible, applications must comply with all of the following:
1. The local government sustainability and/or water director partner in the project has completed the free and publicly available USDN Equity Foundations training or an equivalent at time of submission.
2. Matching funds have been identified. Partners for Places requires a one-to-one match of funding from one or more place-based funder.
