Grants ranging between $5,000 and $20,000 to California and Ohio nonprofit organizations for outdoor programs with a focus on nature. A Letter of Inquiry is required before submission of a full proposal. Funding is intended to support projects that connect nature to the areas of education, conservation of land and wildlife, art and architecture, food and clean water systems, and the reintegration of military personnel into civilian life.

The Adams Legacy Foundation is focused on the power of nature as a source of renewal, delight, education, nourishment, healing, and hope--for individuals, family, and the community. Successful grant applications will emphasize a balanced and integrated approach to nature as a driver and/or lens for innovative projects.

The Foundation is interested in programs and projects that are:

- Outdoors / in open space / wilderness / possibly camps
- Away from electronics
- Experiential / hands on
- Immersive experiences
- Unstructured / allow for free/personal time
- Inquiry based
- Longer term (i.e. longer than a couple of hours, usually over a couple of days)
- Supportive of open space preservation

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Any 501(c)3 organization that believe its mission is a match for the Foundation is welcome to apply.

The Foundation will only fund nonprofit organizations that reside in either California or Ohio, unless an organization is invited to apply by a Board or Grant Committee Member.

The Foundation is not interested in programs and projects that are:

- Environmental/Ecology education (i.e. technical, structured, classroom-type experiences)
- Environmental advocacy​
- Structured / classroom-type experiences
- Short-term / one-time

Pre-Application Information:

Letters of Inquiry may be submitted any time between April 15 and October 15.

All LOIs are processed after October 15 and are responded to by November 15.

If LOI is approved, applicants may complete the online grant application. Applications are due on or before January 15. Decisions will be made and grantees notified by mid-March.

Applications from the past year's awardees are accepted; however, the Foundation will not fund an applicant more than 3 years in a row.
