Pets in the Classroom
Grants to USA pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade classroom teachers in both public and private schools for funding to support the purchase and care of pets or aquariums to be used in their classrooms for the purposes of teaching children about responsibility in caring for pets.
Please Note: The welfare of the small animals involved is of paramount importance. These grants must not be used for the purposes of research or experiments of any kind.
Only small animals that reside in the classroom are eligible for this program. Dogs, cats, and other larger house pets do not qualify. Science projects such as caterpillars/butterflies, worms/composting and chicken egg hatching projects are not considered pets in the classroom and do not qualify for this program. No animals classified as livestock will qualify.
There are several different types of grants to choose from when deciding what pets and supplies a teacher wishes to purchase. Please see the link in the pre-application information section below for further information.
Rebate Grants: Grants are available in $75 (bird and small animal) and $125 (reptile and aquarium) increments.
Sustaining Grants: Grants of $50 is provided to maintain existing classroom pets.
Please note that there are other grant opportunities to choose from; however, the exact funding amount (or estimated value of the grant) is not listed for those opportunities.
Grants are for the 2016-17 school year.
Pets in the Classroom grants are offered to Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade classes only in both public and private schools.
High Schools , Homeschools, Home Daycare Centers and Home-based preschools do not qualify for grants at this time.
Please Note the Following:
- If you have received a Store or Rebate Grant in any previous school year, you are now only eligible for the sustaining grant . You can only receive one Store or Rebate Grant per lifetime, not one per year.
- You may only submit one application per school year! Submitting more than one application may disqualify you from receiving any grant.
- Please remember to apply for the Sustaining Grant through the Sustaining grant tab at the bottom of this page and not through the store directly. The store grant application does not offer a sustaining grant option.
The Pet Care Trust offers seven different Pets in the Classroom grant opportunities.
Before deciding which grant to choose from, review the ”Is Your Class Ready for a Pet in the Classroom?” article here: http://www.petsintheclassroom.org/teachers/is-your-class-ready-for-a-pet-in-the-classroom/
Next, carefully consider the following:
- What type of classroom pet you are seeking?
- Where do you like to shop for your pet supplies?
The grants offered are limited to the animal types listed in the grant description. If you are seeking a classroom pet not listed on one of the retailer grants, or if you choose to shop at a different pet store other than one listed, you can choose the Pets in the Classroom Rebate grant. This is a rebate program that allows the teacher to make purchases then submit receipts for reimbursement.
