Grants to California nonprofit organizations in eligible communities for programs in the areas of K-12 and college education, job creation, and community development. Funding is intended for organizations that operate educational programs in the areas of sciences, mathematics, arts, and music. Funding is also available for organizations that promote community development and programs that foster community development, job creation, and the alleviation of afflictions resulting from illness, age, and economic condition. Grants are available for organizations that serve San Diego County.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The specific guidelines regarding eligibility are as follows:

ONE: The organization supports or operates a formal classroom K through College education program, of which the primary purpose, curriculum, or object emphasizes the teaching of mathematics or the sciences and/or the application of or development of skills related to art and/or the performing arts and music.

or

The organization operates a formal program or series of programs that promote community development and job creation as well as the alleviation of afflictions resulting from illness, age, and economic condition.

TWO: The organization has been established and operated within San Diego County for more than one year and has not been funded by the Thomas C. Ackerman Foundation with the last 24 months.

Applicants should provide verification that the charitable organization requesting the grant is at present a charitable organization under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3) and California & Revenue Taxation Code Section 2370d; copies of the determination letters from the Internal Revenue and Franchise Tax Board must accompany the initial request. The grant request must specify whether the requesting organization is a “public charity” (IRC §509(a)(1, 2 or 3) or a “private foundation.”

Once submitted, the Application will be reviewed and considered by the Board of Directors at its next regularly scheduled board meeting. This review process normally takes between 6 and 12 weeks. Generally, one of three decisions are made: an organization’s request may be turned down; an organization may be invited to submit a more extensive grant application, or an organization may be awarded a grant based on its initial application. All eligible organizations submitting an application will be informed of the Board’s decision by email within a reasonable time following the meeting of the Board at which the application was reviewed.
