Grants of up to $2,500 to California early-stage artists in eligible locations for career advancement activities. Funding is intended to support programs and projects that hone the artistic skills and further the careers of qualifying artists. Arts disciplines include performing, visual, design, digital, and literary arts. Funds must benefit artists in Monterey County.

Local Emerging Artists Program (LEAP) provides a financial stipend to selected artists in the early stages of their career who demonstrate that this support will make a big impact on their work and on our community.

Eligible Artistic Disciplines include: 

  • Design (graphic design, architecture)
  • Digital arts (filmmaking, game design, photography)
  • Literary Arts (creative writing, drama, fiction, journalism, poetry, prose)
  • Performing arts (dance, music, opera, musical theater, magic, illusion, mime, spoken word, puppetry)
  • Visual arts (painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, including crafts such as ceramics

Estimated Size of Grant:

Local Emerging Artists Program (LEAP) provides a financial stipend up to $2,500.

Term of Contract:

Projects must begin after May 1, 2021.

Date of Completion: No later than one year from application approval.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify for this Local Emerging Artist grant, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old and a Monterey County resident;
- Not have received LEAP grant award more than twice
- Be in the early stages (less than 10 years) of your professional artistic career and able to show a commitment to making art your career;
- Have had no major gallery representation, exhibitions, awards or commissions;
- Not be supporting yourself solely by selling your art.
