Grants to USA, Canada, and International researchers, veterinarians, PhDs, and graduate students affiliated with institutions for projects that advance the health of felines and canines. Funding is intended to support research projects and programs, as well as to support research careers.

  • Established Investigator - Established Investigator grants are designed to provide funding for research by individuals and teams with a previous record of research and publication.
  • First Award - First Award grants are designed to assist new faculty in establishing a successful research program.
  • Pilot Study - Pilot Study grants are designed to provide funding for innovative ideas to accelerate discovery and advance Morris Animal Foundation’s mission.
  • Fellowship Training Grant Proposals - Fellowship Training grants are designed to assist new investigators in launching a successful research career by providing salary support in a quality mentoring environment.

Proposals should be designed to convince the reviewers that the proposed project will advance the science of animal health; the investigator clearly understands the health problem and has the expertise to conduct the study; and the approach is scientifically sound.

Estimated Size of Grant:

- Established Investigator Grants: Given the events related to the COVID-19 pandemic at the time of release of this RFP including the likelihood of ongoing economic uncertainties, please note that the Foundation is limiting the total budget to not exceed $75,000, inclusive of indirect costs. The Foundation will expect the majority of submissions to be significantly less than this maximum.
- Pilot Study Grants: The budget cannot exceed $10,800 ($10,000 plus 8% for indirect costs if charged by your institution).
- First Award Grants: Given the events related to the COVID-19 pandemic at the time of release of this RFP including the likelihood of ongoing economic uncertainties, please note that the Foundation is limiting the total budget to not exceed $100,000, inclusive of indirect costs.
- Fellowship Grants: Given the events related to the COVID-19 pandemic at the time of release of this RFP including the likelihood of ongoing economic uncertainties, the Foundation wishes to support early career researchers. The Foundation is therefore allowing up to
$25,000 for consumables funding in applications for this year's Fellowship Training grant.

Term of Contract:

- Established Investigator Grants: Maximum study duration is three years.
- Pilot Study Grants: The maximum study duration is one year.
- First Award Grants: The maximum study duration is two years.
- Fellowship Training Grants: Maximum study duration is two years

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Established Investigator Grants:
- All investigators are eligible to apply.
- Competitive applicants have a previous record of research and publication.
- If the Principal Investigator is not based in the country where the research is to be conducted, then the proposal must have the support of at least one co-applicant based in-country.

Pilot Study Grants:
- All investigators are eligible to apply.
- If the Principal Investigator is not based in the country where the research is to be conducted, then the proposal must have the support of at least one co-applicant based in-country.

First Award Grants:
- To apply, if not a DVM, must have completed or about to obtain a PhD. To receive funding, must have a DVM and/or PhD.
- Must have a full-time, permanent position in a university, accredited zoo or conservation organization or other non-academic equivalent.
- Individuals currently in a residency program are not eligible for this award.
- Postdoctoral researchers should be completing their program and proposing research intended to be conducted in a permanent full-time position.
- Must not have received previous funding as a principal investigator or co-principal investigator for more than $20,000 for any single extramural award.
- Previous funding as a co-investigator is acceptable.
- If the Principal Investigator is not based in the country where the research is to be conducted, then the proposal must have the support of at least one co-applicant based in-country. That situation must be thoroughly justified in terms of value to the investigator in establishing their research program.

Fellowship Training Grants:
- To apply, if not a DVM, must have completed or about to obtain a PhD.
- Must be a full-time graduate student or have a postdoctoral research appointment.
- Must not have completed more than two years of full-time postdoctoral research training on the proposed project.
- Clinical residents and other applicants with clinical service requirements are not eligible.
- Must devote at least 75% of their time to the funded research.
- If the Fellow is not based in a country where a component of the research is to be conducted, then the proposal must have the support of a mentor who is based in-country.

The Foundation cannot accept submissions from individuals. Applicants must apply through an institution that can enter into a legal contract (Grant-in-Aid Agreement) with the Foundation.

Projects oriented toward human health and agricultural animal health do not fall within Morris Animal Foundation's mission and will not be accepted.
