Grants of up to $10,000 to California organizations in eligible locations for projects addressing school readiness outcomes for children. Funding is intended for one-time and short-term projects. Focus areas include family functioning, child development, child health, and systems of care. Eligible applicants are located within Santa Barbara County or operate out of another county but serve a majority of their clients in Santa Barbara County, and that are serving children 0-5, their families, or caregivers.

Express Grants to provide funding for short-term, one-time projects that align with its Result Areas, Outcomes, and Indicators as outlined in the 2021-2025 Strategic & Fiscal Plan.

Result Area #1: Improved Family Functioning

  • Outcome #1 – Families understand their child’s development and promote school readiness skills in the home. 
  • Outcome #2 – Families have an identified and established network of support in their community. 

Result Area #2: Improved Child Development

  • Outcome #1– Children meet school ready knowledge and social-emotional readiness
  • Outcome #2 – Teachers/Providers (ECE/TK/K Teachers and Early Intervention Providers) meet standards of high quality and guide learning towards school readiness skills

Result Area #3: Improved Child Health

  • Outcome #1 – Children enter school healthy, with any social-emotional and behavioral challenged identified and addressed. 

Result Area #4: Improved Systems of Care

  • Outcome #1: Early Learning Opportunities for children birth through Kindergarten are high-quality.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants are eligible if they
• Are located within Santa Barbara County
• Are not currently being funded by First 5 Santa Barbara County;
• Have not applied for and received a First 5 grant for the same activity or purpose in the past 2 years.

First 5 funds may only be used to support activities, programs, and organizations that serve children prenatal through age 5, their families, and the staff who support them.

Express grants are not intended to fund salaries/benefits or require ongoing funding commitments.

Pre-Application Information:

- November 1, 2021 Release RFP
- December 1, 2021 The deadline to submit proposals is Wednesday, December 1, 2021, by 1:00 pm. Complete applications must be received via email by the deadline.
- December 6 to December 10, 2021 First 5 staff will have reviewed applications for intent and consideration Funding recommendations reviewed and approved/denied by staff
- December 13 to December 31, 2021 Finalization of agreement takes place with agencies
- January 1, 2022 Start of the agreement
