Grants to USA and Territories museums to perform a conservation survey in order to enhance the quality of their collections. Funding is intended to support the study of the buildings, collections, building systems, procedures, and collections care and conservation policies of small and mid-sized museums. The program assists museums, such as art museums, arboreta, historic sites, zoos, and botanical gardens, including those belonging to parent nonprofit organizations or government agencies.

Participants in the Collections Assessment for Preservation (CAP) program who complete the program receive an assessment report with prioritized recommendations to improve collections care. CAP is often a first step for small institutions that wish to improve the condition of their collections.

Qualifying institutions must be able to have all of their collections and exhibition spaces (including any off-site storage) assessed within a two-day period.
