Grants of up to $50,000 to California nonprofits, agencies, and faith-based organizations to benefit communities in which the Funding Source's employees reside. Funding is intended to support significant projects, particularly in the focus areas of community enhancement, family support, and health and wellness. The goal of the grant is to create a positive impact in the Central Valley communities of Avenal, Wasco, Sanger/Del Rey, and Delano/McFarland.

Successful applications will demonstrate community need. Proposed projects must be aligned with the organization’s current mission and overall goals, and culminate into something visible and tangible in the community (e.g. park improvements, community health fair, job training).


  • Health and wellness: Examples: physical and mental health, nutrition class, education on chronic diseases, mindfulness
  • Community beautification: Examples: park improvements, community gardens, public art)
  • Supporting families/Family services: Examples: case management support, literacy classes, job training, senior citizen programs)

Program activities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Program development and expansion
  • Capacity-building, innovation, technology and equipment
  • Public education and outreach
  • One-time start-up costs required for the program
  • Programmatic events such as workshops (fundraising events are not eligible)
  • Small-scale capital improvements
  • For grants of $25,000+, small sub-grants to nonprofit program partners may be allowed

Grants will be awarded in amounts between $5,000–$50,000. Grants totaling up to $150,000 will be given to each eligible community.

Term of Contract:

The grant period is January 1 - December 31, 2020.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Successful applicants will be nonprofit 501(c) 3 organizations (excluding schools, which should instead apply for a Wonderful Education School Grants), local government agencies, or faith-based organizations (provided the project has a secular purpose and no religious content), which demonstrate:
- Community need
- History of and/or commitment to working in Avenal, Wasco, Sanger/Del Rey, or Delano/McFarland
- Logical, reasonable and measurable goals, objectives, outcomes and evaluation methods
- Feasibility and capacity to complete project within the one-year grant period including timeline and budget
- Sustainability of the project after the grant period

Organizations based outside Avenal, Wasco, Sanger/Del Rey, or Delano/McFarland may apply as long as proposed projects directly and exclusively benefit these cities.

Wonderful Community Grants will not fund:
- Multi-year requests
- Schools or in-school programs eligible for Wonderful Education School Grants
- Political causes, organizations, candidates or campaigns; activities influencing legislation and/or elections (501(c)4)
- Sponsorship for events, travel, competitions, sports teams, athletic tournaments or conferences
- Private foundations and other grant-making entities
- Religious organizations, unless proposed project has a secular purpose and no religious content, benefits the greater community without regard to religious affiliation, and does not duplicate efforts of other local agencies
- Individuals, scholarships, or tuition assistance
- Endowments/memorials
- Capital campaigns
- Litigation
- Deficits or debt reduction
- Organizations that discriminate against certain groups or individuals in the delivery of programs and services on the basis of race, religion, national origin, gender, age, sexual orientation or disability.
