Grants to California nonprofit organizations in eligible locations for cultural programs and activities that benefit the local community. Funding is intended to support projects that promote equity, inclusion, and a sense of community. Grant funds must be used for projects or performances based in Redwood City or that are accessible virtually to Redwood City residents.

The Commission considers the following priorities in making its funding decisions in 2021:

  • Projects that engage diverse members of the community and advance equity & inclusion.
  • Projects made more accessible to more people- especially those whose first language is not English, who are disabled, or who face challenges traveling to a venue.
  • Projects that promote a sense of community.
  • Projects that follow COVID-19 safety guidelines.
  • Organizations that suffered a significant financial impact due to COVID-19.

Estimated Size of Grant:

The Arts Commission has set-up guidelines to allocate grant funds for Fiscal Year 2021-2022 as follows:
- Small Grants ($1,500 or less, up to twice per fiscal year) = $9,000
- Large Grants ($1,501 or more, all applicants reviewed once per year) = $40,000

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants requesting funds must be a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit or have a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor. The Commission may request copies of past financial statements.

Funding requests must represent no more than 20% of an applicant’s operating income. The Commission does not fund staff salaries.

Pre-Application Information:

Small Grants ($1,500 or less): Requests for Small Grants can be submitted throughout the year, but must be received at least two weeks before the Commission meeting date where action is requested. To confirm meeting dates, please refer to the City Calendar at: http://www.redwoodcity.org/calendar/. Please note that the Commission will consider up to two small grant requests per organization for separate projects in a given fiscal year.

Large Grants ($1,501 or more): The Commission reviews all Large Grant requests at one time during the year. Please note that all large grant applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 7, 2021 and that all applicants must be available for the Commission’s June 3, 2021 meeting to speak nomore-than three minutes in a virtual meeting and subsequently answer questions on their grant request. The schedule for this process is shown below:
- March 8, 2021, Monday: Call for large grant applications sent to all former applicants, recipients and other local arts organizations
- May 7, 2021, Friday: PLEASE NOTE: Deadline for Large Grant Applications for Fiscal Year 2021-2022 must be received by 5:00pm on this date.
- May 14, 2021, Friday: Packet of all applications received by Commissioners
- June 3, 2021, Thursday: Commission meeting devoted to presentations from applicants for Large Grants, funding allocations will not be decided this night.
- June 28, 2021, Monday: Proposed funding agreements presented to City Council by report.
- Week of June 28, 2021: Grantees will be notified of approved awards & contracts sent out (if not before this date).
