Grants to California local education agencies (LEAs) to support agricultural career technical education programs. Funding is intended to enhance public school programs for grades 9-12 that prepare students for college or entrance into agricultural careers. A successful agriculture education program must be based on three components: classroom instruction, Future Farmers of America (FFA) leadership activities, and Supervised Occupational Experience Projects.

The programs seek to accomplish four major purposes:

  • Enable local education agencies to improve the curriculum for students enrolled in agricultural education programs through the development and implementation of (a) an integrated academic and vocational curriculum, (b) curriculum that reflects workplace needs and instruction, and (c) support services for special populations.
  • Increase the competence of future and current high school, middle grades, and regional occupational centers and programs agricultural education instructors in developing and implementing a new integrated curriculum, student and program certification systems, technical preparation strategies, and effective instructional methodologies.
  • Promote the development and use of curriculum, instructional materials, and instructional strategies that prepare students in all aspects of the agricultural industry and foster critical thinking, problem-solving, leadership, and academic and technical skill attainment.
  • Increase linkages between secondary and postsecondary institutions offering agricultural education programs; between academic and agricultural educators; and among agricultural educators, the agricultural industry, professional associations.

Awards will be calculated as follows:

Part 1 - Allocation Based on Number of Agriculture Teachers:
One teacher or less: $4,000
Two teachers: $4,500
Three or more teachers: $5,000

Part 2 – Allocation Based on Program Enrollment: $8.00 per member listed on the R2 Report.

Part 3 – Allocation Based on Quality Criteria 10 and 11 (Optional):
Criterion 10 (Teacher/Student Ratio):
Amounts requested in Quality Criterion 10 will be the indicated amount for that criterion (currently $2,000) multiplied by the full-time equivalent (FTE) agriculture teachers meeting this criterion.

Criterion 11A (Year-Round Employment):
Amounts requested in Quality Criterion 11A will be the indicated amount (currently $2,000) for each teacher who was compensated a minimum of $2,000 for year-round employment.

Criterion 11B (Project Supervision Period):
Amounts requested in Quality Criterion 11B will be the indicated amount (currently $2,000) for each teacher who is provided a project supervision period. Project periods will be counted if the teacher has a preparation period as part of the regular teaching day.

Part 4 – Allocation Based on Quality Criterion 12 (Optional):
$7,500 if all criteria on the attached Quality Criterion 12 Form have been met.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Local educational agencies (LEAs) operating an approved agricultural career technical education program in its school(s). Regional Occupational Centers and Programs (ROCP) are not eligible for funds. However, ROCP classes that are an integral part of the school site's total agricultural program may be counted toward funding.

The LEA must agree to participate in the Agricultural Career Technical Education Incentive Grant Program process. As part of the process, onsite reviews will be conducted by the regional supervisor.

Eligible grade levels: 9, 10, 11, 12

Pre-Application Information:

- May 15, 2020: Application form and announcement letters made available to local educational agencies (LEAs).
- May 15–June 30, 2020: Agriculture Education & Family and Consumer Sciences Office staff available to assist LEAs.
- June 30, 2020: Applications due to Regional Supervisors.
- July 1–July 30, 2020: Regional Supervisors will review and summarize applications
- September 15, 2020: California Department of Education payments established and LEAs notified.

Matching funds are required from non-salaried agricultural expenditures. Under certain conditions, a matching fund waiver may be obtained from the State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Site shall not have received Specialized Agricultural Career Technical Education Incentive Grants totaling more than $10,000 within the past three years. For example, if a site received an $8,000 grant last year, it eligible for up to $2,000 this year.

Site must show expenditures that are unique in nature, i.e. purchasing new equipment for a computer lab, science lab, mechanics laboratory, etc.
